Who was Mamoun Kuzbari?

Mamoun Kuzbari was a statesman, a lawyer, a legislator, a professor, a loving husband and father but most of all he was a proud Syrian. He bore witness to critical events in the 20th Century as the world underwent major transformations, he was a key participant in several major turning points in Syrian history. He served the nation twice as acting Head of State, spent several years as Speaker of the House of Representatives  and served as a Minister in several different Governments.

Kuzbari’s loyalty and steadfast determination to further the Syrian nation came at a significant personal cost. In his quest to ensure liberty and freedom for the Syrian people, he lost his own. Mamoun Kuzbari was eventually imprisoned on political grounds in Syria forcing him into self-exile, leaving him to spend the last three decades of his life outside of his beloved homeland.

The aim of this website is to provide a platform to publish his extraordinary collection of documents, photos and most importantly his personal recollections of major events in Syrian history.

The website’s core is it’s timeline which will attempt to piece together Mamoun Kuzbari’s life and link the variety of sources available in one place to best illustrate his role.

We hope this website proves useful to both historians and the public at large. Our goal is to cement his legacy as a key figure in 20th Century Syrian history while also seeking to improve general understanding of this poorly documented period of time.

Ultimately, we hope his story will inspire future Syrians by reminding them of the democratic foundations and ideals their country once stood upon.

“All I can say is that what I did was out of my love and loyalty to my country and out of my belief that all sacrifices are small if they are for the sake of the glory of our dear and beloved Syria.”
