Cairo – Cairo was puzzled yesterday although not taken by complete surprise by recognition of the new Syrian government by three communists countries including the Soviet Union.

Press and radio reports had prepared the people for the possibility of such action by the communist bloc ever since it was disclosed here by the Syrian underground Communist party said several days ago it would support the regime of Mahmoun Al Kuzbari.

Still Cairo was puzzled and somewhat hurt that the Soviet Union would move ahead of the Western powers in offering diplomatic relations to the separationists whom Nasser has branded a tool of “Imperialists” and of “reactionary machinations”.

Some observers wondered what the Soviet decision augured for the $100 million high Awan Dam which Russia is now building for Egypt.

Ever since the Damascus coup 10 days ago, the Cairo press and radio have been telling the people the revolt from Nasser rule was inspired by Western “Imperialists”.

Official Cairo has also encouraged free speculation that Britain and the U.S were awaiting only a propitious moment to announce recognition of the new Damascus regime. There’s been not a single word written or spoken on the prospect Russia might do so.
