Ghazzi Named Syrian Premier

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Ex-Premier Said Ghazzi, 64, moderate veteran of Syrian politics, was named Wednesday as premier to form the first permanent government of the new Arab Syrian Republic.

The prominent Damascus lawyer headed the 1954 neutral administration that conducted Syria’s last national elections before the new dissolved merger with Egypt in the United Arab Republic.

His designation by newly inaugurated President Nazem el Koudsi pointed up Syria’s drift to a moderate, conservative course following the Sept. 28 Army coup that broke the ties with President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s U.A.R.

Ghazzi is generally known as a man with moderate tendencies toward the right. If he succeeds in forming a Cabinet, Ghazzi will team with moderate rightist Koudsi and right-wing Parliament Speaker Mamoun Kuzbari in running this country of five million people.
